I can't really figure out how it's possible for me to have any sort of mystery. For that matter, so could anyone involved in the institutions that the doppelgangers are trying to infiltrate (I've already established that this is a pretty high-magic society).

It seems like he could use this to just immediately know whether or not someone is a doppelganger. So, I told him where the oblex's hideout is, and they're going to try to track it down and finish it off next session.īut now I'm kinda nervous about the rest of the campaign. As far as I can tell, he was right, the spell says, "Questions verbally directed at the target creature naturally shape the course of its thoughts, so this spell is particularly effective as part of an interrogation." If someone knows the answer to any question at all, you can get that answer just by asking them while Detect Thoughts is active.
This was the first time he'd used the spell, so we took a second to read through the description together. As it was fleeing, one of the players cast Detect Thoughts and yelled out, "Where are you going?" The player said that the oblex would naturally think of the answer in response to the question, and then he'd know it. At the end of the last session, the PCs fought an oblex and did enough damage that it decided to bug out through a sewer grate. She's employing doppelgangers, changelings, oblexes, and other mind-reading shapeshifters to infiltrate social and political institutions behind the scenes of the world.
